British duo Lando Norris and George Russell were both left ruing the race that got away after Max Verstappen won Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix.
A failure by McLaren to bring Norris into the pits quickly enough following a safety car saw him drop from first to third, which he blamed for costing him the win in Montreal.
And Russell blamed his own on-track errors for failing to convert his pole position into a victory as Mercedes finally looked to be competitive.
In the end, Norris had to make do with second place with Russell taking the final step on the podium.
Following a thrilling race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Norris said: “We should have won the race and we didn’t. We had the pace. So it’s frustrating.
“We should have won, simple as that. We didn’t do a good enough job as a team to box when we should have done and not stuck behind the safety car. So I don’t think it was a luck or unlucky kind of thing.”
Russell, meanwhile, said: “I am a bit disappointed in myself. Two errors cost me. But it feels great to be disappointed with third.
“We truly had a fast car this weekend and to be back in the mix fighting for victory was really fun. If you told us ahead of this weekend, pole position and P3, we may not have believed you.”
