Arthur L. Irving, a prominent figure in Canada's business landscape and one of the country's wealthiest individuals, passed away at the age of 93. He was the son of industrialist K.C. Irving and played a pivotal role in expanding the oil business established by his father.

Irving Oil, the company founded by the Irving family, confirmed his death in a statement, noting that he was surrounded by his wife, Sandra, and daughter, Sarah, at the time of his passing.

Arthur Irving was recognized as one of the top 10 richest Canadians by Forbes Magazine in 2023, with an estimated net worth of US$6.4 billion. His business empire included the largest refinery in Canada located in New Brunswick, as well as the Whitegate refinery in Ireland.

Born in 1930, Irving joined Irving Oil in 1951 after attending Acadia University in Nova Scotia. He rose through the ranks to become the company's president in 1972 and held the position of chairman emeritus until his death.

Despite his success in business, Irving faced personal challenges, including a high-profile divorce in 1980 and a strained relationship with his eldest son, who departed from the family business in 2010.

Throughout his career, Irving worked closely with his brothers, J.K. and Jack, to manage the diverse business interests of the Irving family. In 2009, the brothers decided to separate their business ventures, with Arthur taking control of the energy sector.

Irving was known for his commitment to Atlantic Canada and its people, with the company describing him as a 'steadfast champion' of the region. His legacy in the business world and his impact on the community are widely recognized.

Arthur Irving's passing marks the end of an era for the Irving family and the Canadian business community. His contributions to the oil industry and his dedication to his family's legacy will be remembered for years to come.
