The Canadian ambassador to the United States, Kirsten Hillman, has expressed optimism that steep US tariffs on Canadian goods may not be implemented. Hillman stated that discussions with the Trump administration are ongoing, emphasizing the importance of addressing border issues that have been highlighted as reasons for the proposed tariffs.

Hillman highlighted the collaborative efforts between Canada and the US in enhancing border controls, including significant investments in border equipment, increased personnel presence, and joint training exercises with US authorities. These measures aim to strengthen security and combat illegal immigration.

According to Hillman, Canada has made substantial progress in reducing illegal crossings into the US, with a notable 89% decrease in recent months. She emphasized that illegal crossings from Canada represent less than 1% of total crossings into the US, underscoring the effectiveness of existing border control measures.

The Trump administration's decision to impose tariffs is reportedly linked to concerns over the influx of fentanyl and undocumented immigrants entering the US. President Trump invoked the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to declare a national economic emergency, enabling the implementation of tariffs.

Despite ongoing discussions and efforts to address border security issues, the final decision on imposing tariffs rests with President Trump. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect on Tuesday at 12:01 am ET, pending any further developments in the negotiations between the two countries.
