Canada's Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry has strongly criticized the recent decision by the United States to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports. The Minister stated that these tariffs are 'totally unjustified' and emphasized that Canada is the largest source of these materials for the US, supporting key industries such as defense, shipbuilding, energy, and automotive.
The Minister further mentioned that Canada's response to these tariffs will be 'clear and calibrated,' indicating that the country is prepared to take action to protect its interests. Additionally, Canada plans to consult with its international partners and carefully examine the details of the tariffs.
Former Canadian finance minister, who is currently a candidate for the position of prime minister, also condemned the tariffs, labeling them as 'illegal and unjustifiable.' She called for a retaliatory response, suggesting that Canada should match the tariffs imposed by the US dollar for dollar.
It is important to note that the US recently announced a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports, with no exceptions or exemptions. While countries like Canada, Brazil, and Mexico are major suppliers of steel to the US, the tariffs are primarily targeted at China, albeit indirectly.
Both Canadian officials have expressed their intention to engage in discussions with other affected countries to collectively address the issue and push back against the US administration's trade policies.
