The Atlas Lions raced into an early lead through talisman Hakim Ziyech’s brilliant chip after a defensive mix-up from Canada before Youssef En- Nesyri became the first Moroccan to score in back-to-back World Cup games with an emphatic finish.
While Morocco dominated the first-half, Canada were at least able to end their campaign on a positive note. A much-improved display in the second-half will raise confidence heading into 2026 – a tournament they are helping host – after the Maple Leafs built on Nayef Aguerd’s own goal on the stroke of the interval.
That was the first own goal of the tournament and the first time Morocco had conceded in six games. In the knockouts, their sturdy defence could prove crucial, much as it did after Canada picked up the tempo after the break.
Atiba Hutchinson went closest to restoring party but saw his towering effort strike the bar and Morocco managed to see the win out.
