Can wearing a black bra cause breast cancer? 5 strange breast cancer myths you may believe to be true

Breast cancer has affected many women across the world. Not doing self-examination and delayed diagnosis is one of the major causes of breast cancer. Misinformation and myths around it are quite prevalent too. In order to spread awareness around breast cancer, Dr. Rucha Kaushik, Consultant Breast Cancer Surgeon, P.D. Hinduja Hospital & MRC, is bursting some of the myths around the condition.

Myth 1. Biopsy of breast lump spreads tumor cells

This is a total myth. Any breast lump which is suspicious for cancer needs a tissue diagnosis for deciding the course of treatment. Tissue diagnosis is done with true cut or core needle biopsy under local anesthesia. It is usually done as an OPD procedure. The final reports will be ready in 3/5 days and the next required line of treatment will be started as soon as the report comes.

Myth 2. Once diagnosed with breast cancer: A death sentence

It’s a total myth as breast cancer is completely curable if diagnosed and treated early. With newer research advances and newer drugs, multiple options are available for treating advanced cases too with improvement in survival.

Myth 3. Normal mammography means no cancer

Mammography should not be done without a doctor’s consultation. Indication of a mammogram depends on your age, your clinical presentation, and the index of clinical suspicion by a breast expert. A negative or normal mammogram doesn’t rule out cancer. A clinical check-up by a breast specialist is a must.

Myth 4. Cancer won’t come back after complete removal of breast (Mastectomy)

Many women presenting in the early stage of cancer can safely undergo breast-saving surgery. Breast conservation with radiation therapy is as safe and effective as mastectomy if done by an expert and rightly chosen candidate. Radiation therapy is a must after breast-saving surgery.

Myth 5. Wearing a black bra or underwired bra or using deodorant increases the risk for breast cancer

It’s a total myth. There is no proven data or evidence that any particular type or color of the bra increases your risk of getting breast cancer. Breast tissue is an elastic tissue hence wearing a tight support bra is advisable
