England's T20 World Cup chances rated as Australia defend trophy

Runners-up in 2016 and beaten semi-finalists in 2021, England are one of three teams considered favourites to win the World T20 in Australia.

Now under the captaincy of Jos Buttler, the England side is packed with all-rounders and boasts explosive batters at the top of the order.

Question marks remain about their bowling department, however, which is under-cooked and prone to leaking runs.

Buttler is also a fairly unknown quantity as captain, recently coming under the microscope for failing to appeal against Australia’s Matthew Wade for obstructing the field in a warm-up game. Critics would argue it points to a lack of killer instinct, whilst Buttler chalked the lack of appeal up to some diplomacy ahead of months Down Under.

Certainly, one can imagine both England ’s rivals, India and Australia, appealing if the situations were reversed.

New Zealand, who beat England in the semi-final last year, before losing to Australia in a thrilling final, should not be ruled out, while Pakistan, Afghanistan and South Africa are also dangerous on their day.

Indeed, Pakistan's thrilling series against England showed that Babar Azam's side can beat anyone on their day.

Of the rest, Sri Lanka need to come through the first-round stage to progress to the Super 12, but that could help them hit a rich vein of form.

Ireland and Scotland, meanwhile, will be looking to spring a shock in a first-round group that also features West Indies and Zimbabwe.

So, can England win it under Buttler or will it be another tour Down Under to forget?
