'Can't wait' - Nottingham Forest fans make 'revenge' claim as Reds prepare for Sheffield United in play-offs

Nottingham Forest fans want to seek "revenge" for a historic defeat to Sheffield United when the two sides meet in the Championship play-off semi-finals.

Forest were held to a 1-1 draw at Hull City on the final day, setting up a semi-final clash with the Blades after they beat Championship title winners Fulham 4-0 at Bramall Lane. It means the two sides will meet in a repeat of the 2003 Division One play-off semi final fixture, a game which the Yorkshire outfit won in extra-time.

Goals from David Johnson and Andy Reid put Forest ahead in the second-leg at Bramall Lane, although Michael Brown and Steve Kabba pulled Blades level after the hour-mark. Paul Peschisolido and a Des Walker own gave United the advantage in extra-time and the Blades held on to reach the play-off final despite conceding an own-goal from Robert Page.

Despite that fixture taking place nearly 19 years ago, it is still a sore subject for Reds fans and - having come close to achieving automatic promotion this season - they are desperate to seek revenge on the Blades this season. This is what some Forest fans said on social media...

@andycaddell: It’s been a magnificent season. Sheffield United here we come.

@KirstyLouise21x: Going to be 2 nervy games against Sheffield United

@bezza2322: I’m surprised with some of the pessimism in facing Sheffield Utd in the play offs. Much prefer them over 2 legs than a one off. They’ve beaten a team today with one foot on the beach. It wouldn’t matter who we played, it’ll be an emotional rollercoaster

@hannaforest: If people are not scared of Sheffield they weren't there at Bramall Lane in 2003. One of the saddest nights in our history.

@WPacey_89: Sheffield United in the playoffs. I'm getting cold sweats at the prospect. Horrible memories

@LeeAndrew1865: Sheffield United in the Play-Offs, hopes pinned on Johnson up top and a Young Centre Back from the academy that has major premier league interest. Led by a manager that puts great emphasis on youth and playing the right way. Can’t wait, what a season it’s been. You reds!

@dalesilvermate: I know that the nagging Forest fan within you is stressing out but…a quick reminder that the play-off defeat in 2003 against Sheffield United has no influence on the team playing them in 2022. Brennan Johnson was 2 years old. Have some belief please

@mattforde: Had to be Sheffield United. Fate. (And hopefully, revenge)

@forestaremagiic: Hmmmmm Sheffield Utd in playoffs. You can never predict the championship but I reckon whoever wins this tie goes up
