Can 49ers break record for longest win streak in franchise history?

With their Week 2 win over the Rams the 49ers pushed their regular season winning streak to 12 games dating back to last season.

The 2022-23 49ers now stand alone with the second-longest win streak in franchise history. Their 12 consecutive victories are three shy of the franchise record of 15 games which the club won between the 1989 and 1990 campaigns.

It seems inconceivable that any 49ers team would match a feat of one of the greatest teams from their storied past, but a quick look at the schedule shows a definite possibility that San Francisco sneaks past that all-time win streak mark.

Let’s look at their next handful of games and whether they could really get to 16 wins in a row:

Week 3 vs. New York Giants (TNF)

The Giants were outscored 60-0 in their first six quarters of the year. They woke up in the second half of Week 2 to escape Arizona with a. 31-28 win, but it’s clear there are pretty significant flaws with them. Their offensive line in particular is very bad. That matchup is a favorable one for the 49ers’ defensive line.

Week 4 vs. Arizona Cardinals

Arizona is a couple plays away from being 2-0 this year which is far more competitive than it looked like they’d be before the year. There’s still a massive, massive talent gap in these two teams and San Francisco should roll.

Week 5 vs. Dallas Cowboys (SNF)

This is where the uphill climb begins for San Francisco. Dallas has a legitimate claim to being the best team in the NFL through two weeks after thoroughly dismantling the Giants and Jets in their first couple games. Not many teams match up with the 49ers, but Dallas legitimately does and they make for an extremely tough roadblock in San Francisco’s quest to tie their franchise win streak record.

Week 6 at Cleveland Browns

Cleveland might be really good, particularly on defense. The 49ers are better, but they’ll be on a short turnaround from Sunday night to a 10:00am Pacific Time kick on the road against the Browns. However, if the 49ers beat Dallas it might firmly cement them as the best team in the league and make a trip to Cleveland a little less daunting. Getting past the Browns would set the new record for consecutive wins, and it might put the 49ers on track to win a few more in a row and shatter the previous record.
