Scots veterans' home in firebomb attack as vandals torch campervan outside building

Vandals have targeted a military veterans’ home and torched a campervan in Dundee.

The van was set alight on the street outside Rosendael house in Broughty Ferry in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Light fixtures and a statue at the home for old soldiers nearby were also trashed in the mindless attack that happened at about 2am.

The campervan, which does not belong to the home, was destroyed by the blaze.

Its burnt out shell was still in Victoria Road today, covered in police tape.

The van's windows were blown out and many of the bodywork panels were melted or charred, with ash piles alongside the motor.

The Scottish Veterans’ Residence Rosendael provides sheltered housing for ex soldiers, sailors and airmen.

Susie Hamilton, spokesman for the organisation spoke to DundeeLive this morning.

She said: “It is very disappointing that this has happened.

“We don’t think the home itself was specifically targeted as other properties were also attacked in the area.

“We have footage of at least one individual and have passed it on to the police.”

And she added: “We’ll have to repair the statue and light fittings, so it’s very sad that we’ll have to spend money rectifying this damage.

“The good thing is our residents are perfectly safe because our buildings are secure and we had a night concierge on duty but for someone to carry out this thoughtless and mindless vandalism, it’s very disappointing.

“Broughty Ferry is such a lovely community - it’s usually so quiet.

“It’s one of the reasons why it’s great for our residents to live there and they enjoy living there.”

A Fire Service spokesperson confirmed officers weer called to the street just after 2am on Sunday.

Police Scotland has been approached for comment.
