Campaigner's warning over road that's 'accident waiting to happen'

A man says his road is an "accident waiting to happen" with pedestrians forced to walk down a narrow footpath as cars pass by.

Two years ago, residents of Liverpool Road in Neston were informed by Cheshire West and Chester Council that the speed limit outside their homes would be reduced from 30mph to 20mph - however, the changes yet to be made. A Council spokesman said the new speed limit would come into effect later this year.

Michael Waters, 84, who has been campaigning for the speed limit to be slashed since 2020, said: "You cannot walk side by side on the pavements. The pavement is very narrow at some points, just 2ft between the lamp post and the kerb. If somebody is coming down with a pram, anybody walking in the opposite direction has to step into the road.

"We have six dropped kerbs along this road, so it's very easy for cars to drive on the pavement. The other week I was coming back from the shop when a builder's wagon came right along the pavement to avoid a vehicle going the other way."

The former care home owner said the current 30mph speed limit posed a danger to pedestrians and residents trying to exit their driveways, as even drivers travelling the legal limit could be caught off-guard by a blind bend at Liverpool Road bridge.

He said: "There have been one or two near-misses. There will be an accident one day, no doubt about it. The main danger is the speed. The Council did stick notices on our lamp posts two years ago saying they would reduce the limit fto 20mph. There are other roads in the village that have traffic calming humps. We really need them on this road.

"I have reported it to Cheshire West and Chester Council and have been told there hasn't been a fatality on the road. I say how much is a life worth? Somebody should not have to die for something to be done.

"It's a very bad bit of road. We really need to draw attention to it to prevent a death or serious injury. We need some urgent activity by Cheshire West and Chester Council. It really is down to them to do something so the lives of people on Liverpool Road are secure."

A Cheshire West and Chester Council spokesperson said: "The proposed 20mph zone for Neston has been designed and approved, with a projected installation for June or July 2023 as per a previous public notice."
