Campaign to get primary pupils in South Lanarkshire to eat more veg is launched

South Lanarkshire Council schools can sign up to a campaign to encourage pupils to eat more vegetables.

The Eat Them to Defeat Them campaign launched by Veg Power and ITV has been adopted by the council to be made available in all primary schools.

The project is in its fourth year and it has been proven to increase children’s vegetable intake.

Councillor John Anderson, chairman of the community and enterprise committee, said: “Research has shown that children who eat their five-a-day not only have better physical health, but also improved mental health.

“I am delighted that this campaign is returning again this year to encourage our children to eat more healthily and provide parents and carers with some useful tools to help everyone eat smarter.”

The project aims to encourage children to eat more vegetables, as according to the latest National Diet and Nutrition Survey, almost a third of primary school children are eating less than one portion per day.

It is estimated that around one million children across Britain will take part in this year’s campaign and schools have until the end of January to register to take part.

Last year’s campaign was successful, with 468,000 children from 1800 primary schools taking part.
