Cammy MacPherson set for St Johnstone exit amid overseas opportunity

Cammy MacPherson is on the verge of leaving St Johnstone.

The 26-year-old is set to swap Perth for Florida, with Tampa Bay Rowdies as his destination.

Herald and Times Sport understands the central midfielder will join the USL Championship side on an initial loan deal, with a view to making the move permanent further down the line.

Ex-Hearts and Dundee United manager Robbie Neilson is the head coach of the club in the Sunshine State.

The deal is believed to be at an advanced stage ahead of tonight's 11pm transfer deadline in the UK.

Rowdies - who compete in the eastern conference of the United States' second tier - will begin their season on Tuesday, February 11 with an away fixture at New England.

MacPherson joined Saints permanently from fellow Scottish Premiership club St Mirren in January 2022 following a successful loan stint.

In his three years at the club, MacPherson has played 72 times for the McDiarmid Park side, scoring once while providing three assists.

However, the midfielder has found his game time limited in the 2024/25 campaign, with just 12 appearances across the league and Premier Sports Cup action.

Since Simo Valakari's arrival in early October, he has started just once - an away defeat at Ibrox - and has only been named in two further matchday squads against Dundee and Rangers, when he remained an unused substitute.

MacPherson will move on in a bid to get back to playing regular first-team football, as he heads to the USA to further his career.

At the start of this season, MacPherson apologised for sharing a social media video from far-right activist Tommy Robinson

The post contained misinformation spread by the English Defence League founder surrounding the loss of his high-profile libel case in 2021.

Saints owner Adam Webb wrote in an open letter to supporters: "I can assure you Cammy understands and agrees that this is a club that is open to all.

"His contrition is real and he has learned a valuable lesson."

St Johnstone have added Stephen Duke-McKenna on loan from Harrogate Town so far on deadline day.

It's understood the club are trying to re-sign left-back Adam Montgomery on loan from Celtic.
