THE ex-leader of Edinburgh City Council is hosting a Ukrainian refugee in one of his properties despite being suspended from Labour for allegedly sending sexual messages to other refugees.
Day resigned from his position before Christmas after it emerged police were investigating an allegation of inappropriate behaviour.
It was later claimed that Day, 50, had “bombarded” Ukrainian refugees with messages, including asking sexually explicit questions.
It has now been reported that Day continues to host a Ukrainian refugee in one of four properties he owns in Edinburgh and remains part of a government scheme that allows vulnerable refugees to be accommodated with hosts across Scotland.
The council has carried out a welfare check on the person but some have asked why Day is still permitted in the scheme.
Simita Kumar, SNP group leader at the council, told the Sunday Mail: “My thoughts are first and foremost with all individuals who have come forward. We must ensure everyone is supported unequivocally.
“I’m increasingly concerned about the safeguarding of vulnerable adults. If Councillor Day is registered as a sponsor, he must remove himself immediately and I will share my concerns with the chief executive to determine if this can be revoked.”
The newspaper reported that Day was under council investigation after inspectors found that someone was living in another of his properties although he was not a registered landlord.
Day’s register of interests says that he “part-owns” three properties in Edinburgh. Land registry checks confirmed that he owns two homes outright and part-owns two others.
Officials are investigating whether he is acting as a landlord and benefiting financially from anyone living in any of his properties.
It emerged last week the council first received complaints about Day in 2018.
The Herald revealed he was the subject of five complaints between 2018 and the end of 2023.
Last month it emerged Scottish Labour received a sexual harassment complaint against Day “almost two years” before he was suspended.
A Sunday Mail investigation found that the party received a complaint from a constituent saying they received “persistent and unsolicited nude pictures” from him.
A council spokeswoman said there were no issues with the allegations reported in the latest Sunday Mail article but declined to comment.
