Camden street turns into two foot 'river' and floods homes after burst water main

A street in north London has been turned into a river and homes have been flooded by up to two feet of water after a burst water main.

Footage shows flowing water going up to the wheel arches of cars on Belsize Road in Camden in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A person has captioned the Twitter video: “Burst main in Belsize Road NW6 it’s like a river.”

There are eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters tackling the major flood which is covering a wide area of 800 metres.

They were called out at 2.50am after receiving almost 20 calls from the public and “multiple properties” are under water.

Water from the flood has risen to 50 centimetres said the fire brigade (@AIDS_Orphan)

It tweeted: “Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters are dealing with flooding affecting a number of properties across a large area on Belsize Road in #Camden after a water main burst.”

London Fire Brigade has said that a 42-inch water main has burst leading to the flood.

There are also reports that the incident is causing traffic chaos with B509 Belsize Road currently closed both ways at the junction with Fairfax Road.

A statement from London Fire Brigade states: "Eight fire engines and around 60 firefighters have been called to flooding on Belsize Road in Camden.

"A 42-inch water main has burst, causing flooding to a depth of around 50cm across an area of around 800 metres. Multiple properties are affected by flood water.

"The Brigade's 999 Control Officers have taken 18 calls to the flood.

"The Brigade was called at 0250. Crews from West Hampstead, Kentish Town, Euston, North Kensington and surrounding fire stations are at the scene."

The recent freezing temperatures have caused water pipes to burst up and down the country.

In Kent a reported 3,000 customers have been affected by intermittent supply and there has been an apology from South East Water.

Some homes have been without water since Thursday and residents are using a bottled water station.

And in Cleepthorpes one of the busiest streets was closed to traffic after a water main burst leaving residents with little or no water.
