Cambuslang town centre to receive a dash of colour thanks to new murals

Cambuslang is set to be brightened up by a selection of new murals, as an exciting new project gets underway.

Cambuslang community council will unveil its Gateway Project this summer, with the addition of three original murals right in the heart of the town.

The community-led project is part of the Town Centre Strategy Action Plan, which is aimed at improving the centre of the town and also includes the recent £1 million streetscape project and the town’s successful Bank Hub and Cambuslang Loves Local initiatives.

The hope is that the new artwork will create a warm and welcoming entrance to Cambuslang and will showcase some of the town’s best-loved landmarks.

Michelle Farmer, chair of the Gateway Project group and a Cambuslang community council member, told Lanarkshire Live: "We set out in early 2021 to develop a welcoming community gateway at the entrances to the town. Our project involves a Welcome Wall at the rail bridge on Beech Avenue, which will transform a dull wall into a colourful modern artwork.

"We are also working to transform a desolate and neglected area on Glasgow Road into a bright, vibrant, and colourful Sunflower Garden for local residents of all ages to enjoy."

Nigel Wunsch from Cambuslang Rotary Club, the adopter of Cambuslang Station and one of the partners involved in the initiative said: "We are transforming a dreary wall with a mural showcasing the town’s most- loved community landmarks and architecture, together with new and improved street furniture.”

The artwork has been created by local designer, Chris Hannah, who said: "Having lived in Cambuslang for more than 30 years, I was excited about the project and keen to volunteer to help.

"The inspiration for the designs came from the hundreds of local people who responded to our recent survey about their favourite places and spaces around Cambuslang.

"I’ve really enjoyed the process of taking a closer look at our town, from the green spaces to the amazing architecture that can be found all around us."

The group also hopes its sunflower garden will be a shining success later in the year.

Community council member, Suzy Quinn, explained: "The group were inspired by a local child named Hamish who grew a sunflower from seed and placed it in what is becoming our sunflower garden on Glasgow Road for two weeks during the pandemic to bring colour and cheer to the community.

"That is how the idea grew for this space. This led us to encourage and invite local schools and projects to grow in this space and James Aiton Primary School children are currently growing sunflower seeds for the garden this summer.

"The garden will host plants that are nectar rich for pollinators, it will continue the beeline from Rutherglen and Burnside and it will host environmentally friendly plants that help to mitigate air pollution."
