Cambuslang street 'blanketed in smoke' as fire crews race to the scene

Emergency services rushed to a Lanarkshire street this morning to reports of a fire.

A witness called the Scottish Fire and Rescue service after spotting a 'large volume of smoke' appearing from behind a betting office on Main Street, Cambuslang around 9.20am.

Fire crews confirmed that they mobilised three appliances to the scene and extinguished a rubbish fire, behind a commercial premises on the street. No injuries have been reported as a result.

The witness added: "Towards the end of the incident the main street was blanketed in smoke and there was, and still is, a horrible acrid smell."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 9.27am on Tuesday, February 21 to reports of rubbish on fire behind a commercial premises on Main Street, Cambuslang.

"Operations Control mobilised three appliances to the area where crews extinguished the fire and made the area safe before leaving the scene at 9.53am.

"There were no casualties."
