Cambuslang Rangers co-boss Billy Campbell says it was more postponement pain for his squad on Saturday.
Camby’s Kilmarnock Pie West of Scotland Football League Cup tie with Wishaw was postponed at less than an hour’s notice at the weekend.
Campbell’s men have only played four times so far this year and they hope to be in Conference B competition this Saturday away to Kello Rovers.
They are top of the section, two points ahead of Gartcairn with three games in hand. Campbell says poor drainage in parts of their Somervell Park turf made it not fit for purpose against Wishaw.
He said: “We were gutted. We had worked on the park all week to try and get it playable. We walked round the park and the referee looked at a part of the corner when you come out the tunnel that is always pretty soft.
“It struggles to drain away and I think the drains may have actually collapsed, and have for a number of years. That part of the park always struggles to drain with an excess amount of water on it.
“It just can’t get things away in time. That one area the referee had deemed to be dangerous and on that, the park was unplayable. Most of the park was bang on and by the referee’s admission, there wasn’t a problem with the rest of the park.
“That one part was dangerous for players getting their studs caught because the ball wasn’t bouncing on it. It’s really disappointing but we need to respect the referee’s decision.”
Campbell says his side have to focus on the games in front of them during their quest for the title, rather than the games called off. He’s calling for a professional approach as a trip to Kello Rovers looms on Saturday.
He added: “We’ve had numerous fixtures moved due to cup games, Covid and the league rescheduling due to the weather. It’s a bit of a worry as we want our leagues games in.
"It’s just painful and frustrating but there’s nothing we can. The challenge is still there for us. From our perspective, the challenge is now clear for the guys.
"They have put themselves into this position where the road ahead is very clear in regards to what games need to be won. Whatever the challenge is ahead of us, we take it a game at a time. Hopefully the weather holds up.”
