Cambuslang park needs further investment says family of the man it's named after

The family of the man a Lanarkshire football pitch is named after have called for South Lanarkshire Council to do more with the facility.

Alastair Brownlee is the son of Peter Brownlee, the former councillor who the Peter Brownlee Pitch and pavillion in Cambuslang are named after.

Mr Brownlee believes the sports ground hasn't been improved enough in recent years, and was left concerned after floodlights for the pitches were recently removed by the local authority.

South Lanarkshire Council says the move was down to safety fears, and that investment in the park was recently completed.

Alastair told Lanarkshire Live: "So many new homes in Cambuslang have built, but everyone knows there is a lack of facilities here for kids. The park has been in a mess but I was told the council were going to upgrade it, and get things like the changing rooms all fixed up and ready to go

"The next thing I saw was the floodlights being taken away, and there seems no guarantees that they will be replaced at all. You need somewhere for these kids to play, and the park could be great if it was looked after and invested in."

Peter Brownlee served as a Labour councillor for the area for many years, including on the 8th District Council that covered Cambuslang and the later Strathclyde Regional Council.

The park was named after him to honour his dedication to the area.

South Lanarkshire Council insists that improvements have been made.

David Booth, executive director of community and enterprise resources, said: “The floodlights at the Peter Brownlee pitch have not been operational for some time due to their age and condition. In fact, the site is one of three across South Lanarkshire where the poles had been identified as no longer fit for purpose through a structural testing process.

"As a result, and to ensure public safety, they have been removed.

“This process is unrelated to the works to the pavilion that were recently completed, allowing South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture to reopen the pitch in time for the end of the 2021/22 grass football season. As we have done throughout, we would welcome any discussion with the Brownlee family and seek to reassure them of our commitment to the pitch as a valuable leisure facility for the area."

The floodlight removal is not the first case recently where safety fears have affected local sports facilities.

Earlier this year we told how South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture had knocked back installing moveable goalposts at the pitches in Rutherglen's Fernhill area over health and safety concerns.
