Cambuslang Harriers runner completes gruelling charity challenge early

Cambuslang Harriers member Chris Campbell conquered the National Three Peaks Challenge five hours ahead of schedule as he raised money for charity.

Campbell not only climbed Snowden, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis in succession, but cycled between all three mountains, for Wateraid and Motor Neurone Disease charity My Name’5 Doddie.

Chris’ target was to accomplish the feat inside 72 hours, but managed it in 67.

He started at 2.30am on Friday, June 17, and covered the 25.5 miles and 11,000 feet of mountain, and 450 miles of cycling with 17,5000 feet of climbing, mostly into a head-wind.

Another way of measuring the achievement is to consider that he was on foot for 13 hours and on the bike for 38, meaning he only had 17 hours to snatch some food and sleep.

He was joined by a support team of his niece Tina, who did all three mountain climbs, and his brother Tony, who did most of the cycling.

Club members Iain McNair assisted on Scafell and Andrew and Gail Blain on Ben Nevis.

While Chris was engaged with that feat, 23 club members took part in the Brian Goodwin 10k Road Race, hosted by Bellahouston Harriers.

Evie MacKinnon was the club’s star performer, finishing well clear of her rivals in a personal best time of 35.39, five days after winning bronze in the Scottish 10k Championships.

Mike Christoforou, also a Scottish 10k bronze medallist, looked to be in contention for first or second, but developed a stitch 6k in that forced him back to seventh.

Kevan Harvey was 11th with a PB of 31.22, and Kieran Cooper also posted a PB of 32.13 in 16th. Iain McDonald was 36th in 34.25, with the combined bringing Cambuslang in as second team, just one point behind Kilbarchan.

Erica Christie took the W60 prize in the Loch Lomond 10k the following day, clocking 46.43, and received her award from former Commonwealth 10,000m gold medallist Lachie Stewart.

Several early morning parkruns took place, with M50 Kerry-Liam Wilson, M40 Stuart McGeachy and M45 Justin Carter taking the honours in their respective races.

Second places went to Theo Carter, W40 Carole Setchell and Chris Upson.

Six Harriers took part in the Glasgow Men’s Health 10k.

Kieran Cooper (32.57) finished third, followed by Euan Duernberger in 10th, with a PB of 34.47.

Kieran’s dad Richard was 12th and first M50, with M40 George Pettit third.

And Harriers filled the first two M55 positions thanks to Chris Upson (15th in 35.29) and Kevin Newbury (26th in 36.27).
