Cambuslang Harriers athletes fly the flag at British Masters championship event

Cambuslang Harriers athletes were flying the flag at the British Masters Road Relay Championships last month, producing some top results.

Harriers entered two teams for the event at Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, where the course has been tweaked to be, if anything, tougher to run, with the finishing straight of Heartache Hill still visible, and which is now measured at 5.05km long.

Both teams started in dry but windy conditions in the third race of the day, the combined M55/M65 race over three legs.

Paul Thompson and Colin Feechan were on first-leg duties for the M65 and M55s, respectively, with Thompson eighth overall and his time of 19.14 giving the team a commanding lead of just under two minutes from Southampton AC, and Salford Harriers over two minutes behind.

With no other M65 athlete able to break the 20-minute mark, this was the fastest time of the day.

Feechan brought the M55 team home in 25th place, in 20.48.

Frank Hurley was out on leg two for the M65s, and recorded the second-fastest time with 20.34, the fourth-fastest time of the day.

This increased the lead to four minutes over Norfolk, with Barnet and District moving in to third.

Dave Thom, on second-leg duties for the M55s, improved their position to 18th, with a time of 20.37.

Frankie Barton eased round the course for the M65s on the last leg, with a time of 20.57, over three minutes clear of Norfolk, with Oxford City coming through to claim the bronze.

Kevin Newberry was making his event debut for the M55s on the first leg.

Returning to the sport after a 30-year hiatus, he lifted the M55s to 14th overall with a time of 19.11, the sixth-fastest for the third leg.

Club members Archie Jenkins and Lynne Marr were amongst the stewards on the day, who helped the event run smoothly.
