Cambridge United boss admits 'frustration' at goals Bolton scored as Wanderers given compliment

Mark Bonner admitted frustration at the goals his Cambirdge United side conceded against Bolton Wanderers who he feels are good enough to carve out chances and score without being given the chances his U's side gave them.

After a host of chances where Wanderers should have taken the lead in the first half, they did just that when Amadou Bakayoko slotted home before half-time.

Bolton weathered pressure from the U's in the first 15 minutes after the break as Mark Bonner's side sought a route back into the encounter.

But Dapo Afolayan made the points secure with a great solo effort to ensure Wanderers went four wins on the bounce and indeed with four clean sheets in a row which has lifted them back into the top half of the table.

Bonner's side has spells in the encounter particularly after half-time before Afolayan scored Bolton's second goal, but ultimately the U's failed to muster a shot on target.

Bonner admitted frustration at the goals his side conceded who he felt they had a hand in as he believes Bolton are a good outfit who will punish teams if granted opportunities.

He said: “A tough game for us, especially in the first half and I thought Bolton played really well.

"They played a technically better game than us tonight and used the ball better. It’s not often we play them and match them for possession, 51 49, they played 10 more passes than us in the game in total, 383 to 393 so in terms of a possession game, we got some control of it in periods.

“We had a few decent chances but we haven’t had an attempt on target. We’ve come close on a couple, hit the post off of a head, Sam was really close in the second half and at one down, we’re in the game and the mistake lets them run away with it.

“They’re a good side, they’ve got some really good players, they played in a way that was really good in the first half and put us under a lot of pressure, but didn’t make that count. We were always in the game. We’re really disappointed with the first goal and the quality of it. It’s poor defending from us.

"They’re good enough to score and create chances without you giving them simple ones with the second phase of a set play, and there’s things that we can learn from it because there’s bits we didn’t do well enough tonight and then on the other side of the coin, we came here and got battered with the ball last year and we’ve matched them tonight in lots of areas and had a few good moments ourselves.

"I’m frustrated that we haven’t scored a goal, frustrated that when we killed the crowd a little bit and they didn’t get anywhere near really causing us the problems in the second half than what they did in the first half and we’ve let them back in the game with an error that they’ve taken, so the goals from our side were really frustrating.

“We needed to stay in it longer in the second half and not gift them the opportunity that they got so it’s frustrating for us because they’re a good side that punish you if you give them the chance.”
