Former NFL quarterback Cam Newton revealed his biggest regret from his one season with the New England Patriots.
“My biggest regret from New England is the fact that I didn’t play in front of the fans,” Newton said on the 4th & 1 with Cam Newton Podcast. “Because me being me, I feed off of the energy of people, whether it’s a ‘boo’, whether it’s a ‘ooh’, whether it’s a ‘ahh’ or a ‘nah’,
“I feed off of that and I use that. And when we was in them doggone stadiums, and it was empty, they was pumping crowd noise, I’m like, ‘Man, this (expletive) is weak.'”
Newton finished the 2020 season in New England, which was marred by COVID, with 2,657 passing yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His final game in New England was his best. He went 21-of-30 and threw for 242 yards and three touchdowns.
Newton also showed that he could still run with the ball, tallying 137 carries for 592 yards and 12 touchdowns. He was the first New England dual-threat quarterback in quite some time. He also had the difficult task of starting the post-Tom Brady era for the Patriots.
Newton would go on to finish his career with the Carolina Panthers in 2021. If nothing else, his comments makes you wonder how fans would have reacted to his presence on the field, and whether those reactions would have elevated his level of play.
