Liverpool right-back Calvin Ramsay has opened up on his injury frustrations after joining the Reds from Aberdeen in the summer in a £4.2million move from Pittodrie.
Ramsay made his debut for the Dons in 2020 as a 16-year-old, and took to the fore as Aberdeen's main man in that role the following season which saw Jim Goodwin 's men finish tenth in the table. One of the only shining lights in an admittedly poor campaign, Ramsay was sought after by many of Europe's biggest teams, eventually settling on Liverpool in a move that saw Aberdeen smash their record sale.
The dream move didn't quite turn out how Ramsay would have pictured it, though - at least to start with. An injury suffered before he even had chance to make his debut stunted his development for three months, with the youngster itching to find his way onto the field for the FA Cup champions. And after finally managing to do so at the start of November, Ramsay has opened up on his injury hell which left him "frustrated" at a lack of game time.
He said on Liverpool's official website : "It was very frustrating because obviously I’d just signed for the club. I just wanted to come in and get to work and start training and playing.
"But I found out in my medical that I had a stress fracture in my back, and it wasn’t the best news. I was out for a couple of months with that, but I just worked hard in the gym every day and tried to get back as soon as I could.
"Now that I’m back training, I’m just enjoying it. Hopefully I can get some minutes."
The youngster has managed 93 minutes worth of action so far this season - a full game against Derby in the EFL Cup and three minutes against Napoli in the Champions League damp squib on the final day of the group stage. But Ramsay could not hide his delight at featuring against the Italian giants back in November, citing the chance to play in the Champions League as 'an amazing moment'.
He added: "It’s an amazing moment – it’s what every youngster wants to do, play in the Champions League and at the highest level possible. I’m just lucky to have made my debut. My family being there as well was special, so I’m just delighted with that.
"Hopefully. That (a Premier League outing) is the aim now. I just need to keep working hard. This is a good chance to show what I’ve got. Hopefully I can make my Premier League debut as well."
He isn't the only Scottish full-back at the Premier League giants; with Tartan Army favourite Andy Robertson also strutting his stuff on Merseyside. With the left-back having featured in 240 minutes of action for the Reds since his move from Hull City in 2017.
Winning six trophies since, and finishing runner-up in two Champions League finals, Robertson's experience is invaluable when it comes to helping Ramsay settle in. And the youngster says his fellow countryman has been giving him advice about how to go about his business.
"He’s been brilliant. Obviously he’s from Scotland as well and ever since I’ve come in he’s given me advice and little tips on how to improve and how the manager here wants to play. I try to take it all on board as best as I can. Hopefully he can keep giving me little pointers and I’ll take it on board and see where we go."
