Calvin Ramsay profiled as Leeds United links with Aberdeen defender continue

Leeds United are among a host of clubs keen on signing Aberdeen right back Calvin Ramsay before tomorrow’s deadline.

The Whites are reportedly fighting alongside Watford and Serie A outfit Bologna for his signature, with Gianluca Di Marzio reporting on Friday that Leeds were at the front of the queue.

Di Marzio claims that Bologna offered Aberdeen a loan with an option to buy, which the Scottish side were not happy with, allowing Leeds to take pole position in the race.

Reports have emerged this morning, though, that Watford are now also keen on the 18-year-old, which could mean an intense battle for his services in the next 24 hours.

So, who is he and why is there such a huge clamour to sign him?

Ramsay appears to be the next top quality full back off the Scottish football production line, following in the footsteps of Andy Robertson, Kieran Tierney, as well as youngsters Nathan Patterson and Aaron Hickey.

He was handed his debut for the club towards the back end of last season, where he came on as a substitute in a 1-0 defeat against Dundee United.

After a handful of appearances from the bench, Ramsay has established himself as a key member of Aberdeen’s first team squad this season.

He set his stall out for the campaign instantly when he was handed a start in a Europa Conference League qualification match against Hacken.

Ramsay registered the first of his eight assists for the season against the Swedish side and his dynamic, attacking displays are what has caught the attention of scouts from across Europe.

Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack believes that despite his age, he is a right back of unique, but elite quality.

Via quotes from Football Transfers, he said: “There are not many right backs at his age like him, doing what he does. Look at the data and all the clubs look at the same scouting systems.

“He is in the elite upper bracket, right up there, for a young right-back in Europe.

“People are seeing that and that is why we believe there will be a lot of interest.”

A marauding full back are exactly the attributes that fit a Marcelo Bielsa team, so if Leeds can secure his signing, they could have a top young player on their hands – not just for the future, but for now too.
