Calvin Bassey suffers post Rangers debut disaster as Ajax boss offers no defence on 'wild' red card

Calvin Bassey endured a nightmare start to his time at Ajax after leaving Rangers as he was sent packing for a late challenge - with his boss having no complaints.

The Ibrox club sold the former Leicester City youngster in a deal worth in excess of £20 million earlier this month and Bassey came on for his competitive debut in Ajax's madcap 5-3 defeat to PSV Eindhoven in the traditional Dutch season opener - the Johan Cruyff Shield. 14 minutes after coming on, he lunged into a tackle on Ismael Saibari and a red card was shown.

New boss Alfred Schreuder hopes Rangers' ex-defender learns from the moment that ended up being rash: "In the end, I think the red card was decisive. You felt we could go on and win it, but it is always more difficult with one less man I looked at the incident after the game.

"He certainly didn't do it deliberately, but he's gone in a little too wild. I admit a red card could have been given and I can understand why they gave it."

It was a tough start to life at the Dutch champions for Bassey and his debut match couldn't have proven more frantic.

Already at 2-2 before he came on, PSV got their third and fourth goals via Cody Gakpo and hat-trick hero Guus Till before one-time Light Blues target Xavi Simons finished off the scoring.
