Calvin Bassey suffered a nightmare Ajax debut after being shown a straight red card.
The former Rangers star made a record breaking £19million move to the Dutch giants earlier this month, who fought off competition from English Premier League side Brighton. But Bassey was on the pitch for just 14 minutes before receiving his marching orders in the Johan Cruyff Shield against PSV
Ajax took the lead through former Tottenham man Steven Bergwijn, but the Eindhoven side came roaring back with two goals before half-time. Guus Till netted a double to turn the game around before Antony squared things up after the break. Cody Gakpo restored PSV’s lead before Till completed his hat-trick on 69 minutes, giving Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s side a two-goal lead. Ajax gave themselves a lifeline though when Mohammed Kudus pulled one back three minutes later but their chances of drawing level in a thrilling encounter were dashed when Bassey was dismissed just 14 minutes after coming on as a sub.
He lunged into a dangerous tackle with his studs up. It was referred to VAR, but Bassey was forced to make an early exit and head up the tunnel. PSV made the game safe in added time. Rangers-linked Xavi Simons added a fifth to claim the first silverware of the Dutch season.
The score was 2-2 when Bassey entered proceedings for the first time in an Ajax shirt. But he had a quarter-of-an-hour to forget after PSV raced into a two-goal lead before he saw red.
Just hours earlier, his former side came from behind to beat Livingston. Gio van Bronckhorst 's team fell behind to Joel Nouble's opener, but second-half strikes from Scott Arfield and James Tavernier ensured a winning start to the Premiership campaign.
