Calvin Bassey Rangers transfer latest as 'highest bidders' revealed amid potential £5m game-changer

Calvin Bassey is a man in-demand as Rangers look to either keep hold of one of their prized assets or cash in for a premium price.

Rumours have been spinning all summer that the Nigerian international could be heading out of Ibrox after stellar performances in both Europa League and Scottish Cup finals capped off an excellent second season at Rangers. Aston Villa were one club mentioned early on but it's now fellow Premier League club Brighton and Hove Albion who are strongly linked, alongside Dutch champions Ajax.

The Daily Express report that Ajax are seeking Bassey out at a replacement for Manchester United-bound Lisandro Martínez, and are the 'highest bidders' at present for Leicester City's former youth player. Brighton meanwhile have also lodged a bid with the asking price reported to be in the region of £25 million. Rangers are also reported as willing to 'encourage an auction' as to help raise what they claim.

In another report, the Telegraph claims similar. Ajax are mentioned as favourites for the defender and could prevail with a bid worth up to £20million.

Brighton are said to only want to go as high as £15 million and that £5 million difference could prove key in Ajax winning the race.
