Calvin Bassey in 'no doubt' Rangers transfer exit confession as he gushes over Ajax's Champions League credentials

Former Rangers defender Calvin Bassey admits that he had "no doubt" over his Ibrox exit as targets an impact on the Champions League with Ajax.

Rangers banked a club record fee with the sale of the Nigeria international to the Eredivise champions for an expected £19.59million plus add-ons, with the Dutch giants moving quickly to replace the outgoing Lisandro Martinez after he joined Manchester United for a bumper £55m fee. Bassey's profile sky-rocketed in the latter half of last season with a series of standout displays in Rangers' run to the Europa League Final.

With Champions League football around the corner, the 22-year-old is already looking forward to his first chance to rub shoulders with Europe's elite, and admitted it was a key part in his decision to leave Ibrox. He confessed there was no doubt in his mind over leaving the Scottish Premiership when he got the call about the move to the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Bassey said: "As a kid you always dream about playing for the biggest clubs in the world, playing in the Champions League and winning things. That's what Ajax is about. They play in the Champions League and they win trophies. They have got a history. The players who have come in and out of this club who have gone on to be amazing players and careers at Ajax or elsewhere just shows that something is right here.

"It just made perfect sense for me. When I got the call, you didn't have to ask me twice. It was a definite yes. No doubt. It's a nice feeling having such a great club interested in you. Even just the interest, but for them to follow through and for me to be here, I can't put into words really."
