Calvin Bassey handed Ajax defence as ex-Rangers star hailed by Feyenoord legend in 'cup of tea' quip

Calvin Bassey is a scapegoat for Ajax according to a Dutch football legend as he claims the former Rangers man would be blamed for a cup of tea being spilled in Amsterdam.

The Nigerian defender, who made a big-money switch to the Eredivisie in the summer has found ups and downs at Ajax so far in his career after garnering a record fee for Rangers under Giovanni Van Bronckhorst. Bassey was a standout at Ibrox during league and Europa League action last season but has come under heavy criticism at times during his spell in Holland.

Ajax could only draw with FC Twente on Saturday with defender Devyne Rensch, who was at centre-half while Bassey played at left back, sent off. Feyenoord legend Willem van Hanegem, however, believes the 23-year-old is an easy target for blame and says he is not being used properly in the Dutch capital.

In his Algemeen Dagblad column he writes: "This boy can really defend, but they constantly put him in situations for which he is less suitable as a player.

"Ajax was always the club that could destroy teams by playing football from behind. That is not possible with Jorge Sánchez, Bassey and Devyne Rensch. Jurriën Timber does have those capacities, but they have not improved for some time. at halftime and afterwards again about Bassey, because if someone in the Johan Cruijff ArenA knocks over a cup of tea, then he has done it.

"I think Bassey would never have made that mistake. Rensch was one-on-one against Ricky van Wolfswinkel, not really a fast striker. And he was so surprised. Unbelievable as far as I'm concerned."
