Calvin Bassey given funny Rangers return warning as 'hopefully he doesn't love it' message sent

Scott Arfield says Calvin Bassey greeted his Rangers friends when they travelled to the Netherlands this week - but a similar welcome back in Glasgow won't be waiting for him.

The Nigerian defender only left Ibrox for Dutch champions Ajax this summer but his return to his former stomping ground is already closing in after the pair were drawn together in Champions League Group A. Alongside Liverpool and Napoli, they will compete for a place in the competition's last 16, or potentially third for a chance to drop into Europa League action.

Such a place was secured by Rangers with a 1-0 victory over PSV in play-off second leg action confirming a 3-2 aggregate success, with Bassey meeting his now former teammates in Eindhoven. Arfield says it was nice to see him and the improvement already is clear, but there will be no friends on the park in Govan.

He told Sky Sports: "Amazing draw. We were speaking to Calvin at our hotel on Tuesday night. We seen him and he was talking ever so highly of his new teammates, which you would expect.

"They basically invented football in a different way back then and that methodology stays the same. His football IQ and his talent has risen to a new level.

"We know he isn't going to be the same boy when he comes back that is for sure. He is going to be a better player and like his teammates it is going to be a task to get the better of them.

"I saw his Instagram post yesterday the big man was loving it. Hopefully he doesn't love it at Ibrox when he comes back!"
