Callum Wilson has quipped that he 'probably' would have been hauled off the field if he did not square the ball to Jacob Murphy for Newcastle United's second goal in the 5-1 win against Brentford.
With Newcastle already 1-0 up, Wilson seized upon goalkeeper David Raya's under-hit pass in the 28th minute last week and raced through on goal. Raya did admittedly narrow the angle as he rushed out but rather than taking on the shot himself, like most strikers, Wilson unselfishly played the ball back across goal to the unmarked Jacob Murphy, who doubled the Magpies' advantage.
It was a rare assist from Wilson, who clearly had a similar situation on his mind from just a few minutes earlier when Murphy slipped in the number nine outside the area. Wilson had the unmarked Miguel Almiron and Joe Willock to his left during that particular breakaway but rather than picking out a team-mate, the striker took it on himself and Ethan Pinnock blocked his effort.

Assistant manager Jason Tindall was far from happy with Wilson's decision and the 30-year-old joked that if he had taken on the shot himself once again and missed, he would 'probably be getting pulled off' the field a lot earlier than he did in the 84th minute.
"There was a stoppage in play and the assistant manager said, 'Cal, you have to square that,'" Wilson told the Footballer's Football Podcast. "I'm like, 'Square what? I was having a one v one in the box.'
"Subconsciously, that's in my mind so as I've intercepted it, I've seen Murphy make a movement but the goalie's legs are so wide open! But I squared it anyway. It made it 2-0 so it was the right decision. We won the game."
