Callum Wilson reveals key to him bettering best Newcastle United seasonal tally since Alan Shearer

Newcastle United star Callum Wilson says he will keep his feet on the ground when the 2023/24 season kicks off.

The Toon number 9 netted 18 goals - his best ever Premier League tally - and became the highest scorer in a season since the days of Alan Shearer on Tyneside. But Wilson is eager to better that next term and says that failing to get into the 20s last season will drive him on.

Wilson told reporters: "Personally 18 was my highest in the Premier League. I am disappointed not to get to 20. But it gives me more hunger to try to go again next season and achieve that goal.

"Nothing changes for me, for me to get where I am, you keep working hard. You keep working hard and keep feet on the ground."

Wilson will also get the chance to test himself in the Champions League next season against some of the biggest names in Europe. But he says Newcastle aren't there to make up the numbers.

Wilson added: "It is going to be unbelievable to play in the Champions League. Something you have dreamed of as a kid. So to achieve and fulfil it is fantastic. For me personally I played in the World Cup which was another dream of mine.

"But you must stay level headed. At the end of the day, there's more hard work ahead of us. You want to play in the Champions League and affect games. We want to prove ourselves again next season."
