Callum Wilson admits he would be "deluded" if he thought he would start for England ahead of Harry Kane at the World Cup in Qatar.
However, the Newcastle striker insists he will be ready to capitalise on any minutes Gareth Southgate hands him during the tournament. Wilson earned his place in the Three Lions squad with his fine return of six goals and two assists in 11 Premier League appearances this season.
He will serve as the principal back-up for England captain Kane, beating Roma centre-forward Tammy Abraham to inclusion in the 26-man squad. Wilson has no illusions about his role - which is likely to be as an impact substitute - but is prepared to take his chance "with both hands" when called on by his manager.
"I know Harry is an unbelievable player and England captain, he's going to be the first choice on most people's team sheets," the former Bournemouth told BBC Sounds' The Footballer's Football Podcast. "I know my role, I'm not deluded enough to think I'm going to go to the World Cup and be playing every game. I feel there will be an opportunity and when it comes I'll be ready to take it with both hands."
Kane, who has scored 13 goals and provided three assists in 22 Tottenham appearances this season, arrives at the World Cup knowing he has a good chance of becoming his country's all-time record goalscorer this winter. He sits two goals shy of Wayne Rooney's total of 53 and is set to lead the line as England take on Iran on Monday, before further group-stage clashes with United States and Wales.
The 29-year-old is vastly experienced having been capped 75 times, while Wilson only has four Three Lions appearances and one goal to his name. Nonetheless, the 30-year-old is confident his leadership abilities will shine through in the Middle East.

"It's not just on the pitch attributes I bring, I'm older, I'm 30, I'm a leader," he added. "I'll be in training pushing people. I'd like to come back from the World Cup with a goal to my name, that would be the pinnacle of my career."
Wilson's quality in front of goal is clear for all to see and his form this season has helped Newcastle go third in the Premier League, but he has been dealt a number of serious injury setbacks over the years, limiting his involvement at international level. He is one of three Magpies players in Southgate's squad, alongside goalkeeper Nick Pope and full-back Kieran Trippier, both of whom have also enjoyed excellent first halves of the season.
