Callum Wilson laughs off 'super sub' tag after yet another Newcastle brace

Callum Wilson has spoken of his delight after Newcastle United beat Southampton 3-1 thanks to his second half double. The number 9 was not in the starting line up but now has four goals in his last two appearances.

Wilson and Newcastle are now within touching distance of the Champions League and can do it with games to spare. Wilson said: “I think we started slow and sloppy, we had a game a few days ago so it was probably down to tired legs and minds, we made changes at half time, got the crowd involved and brought new energy to the front line.

"Mindset was the main thing, we regrouped at half-time, tactically tweaked a few things and blew them away second half."

Wilson though is not happy with the tag of super sub, he told Premier League Productions. He laughed off: “No chance! You have to have a good mindset as a striker even after scoring two midweek and then being on the bench.

“I came on, got a couple of goals, just frustrated not to get the hat trick for myself. Finding space in the box comes natural to me, it was great play from Alex [Isak].

“We put ourselves in front with a deflection and another goal, it was poor defending from their part but the third just wouldn’t come. Hopefully the hat-trick comes next week, all you can do is put the ball in the net when you get the opportunity, it just wouldn’t go in but it will eventually. It was a good three points."
