Callum Wilson handed England World Cup boost after Harry Kane injury scare

Callum Wilson's hopes of starting for England at the World Cup have been given a significant boost after Harry Kane is awaiting a scan on an ankle injury. The Three Lions talisman was taken off against Iran as a precaution following a number of robust challenges.

The Newcastle United striker would come on for the final 15 minutes of the game, setting up Jack Grealish for England's sixth goal of the tie. Wilson himself is having his load managed after returning from a hamstring injury earlier this year.

Kane is reportedly set to miss England's game against the United States tomorrow, with Wilson now in the fold to replace him.

Gareth Southgate said post-match: “I think Harry’s fine. It looked like a bad tackle but he carried on in the game. We took him off because we felt it was a moment in the game we could do that.”

Losing Kane would be a massive blow for the England boss, after he won the Golden Boot at the last World Cup and is now just two goals shy of Wayne Rooney’s England scoring record of 53.
