Callum Wilson gives injury update and reveals Newcastle United aim before end of season

Callum Wilson believes he can score goals for Newcastle United before the end of the season. The Magpies’ number nine remains the club’s top goalscorer with six - despite not featuring since the 1-1 draw with Man Utd on December 27.

A torn calf led many to fear the worst, with Eddie Howe confirming in February that Wilson is sidelined until ‘the last few games’ of the campaign. The 30-year-old has been prolific since a £20million from Bournemouth but has also spent significant time on the treatment table, making just 41 top-flight appearances out of a possible 67.

Wilson revealed he has started jogging again following his injury and now aims to score goals for Newcastle before the summer break. Speaking on the Footballer’s Football podcast, he said: “It was a nice trip away [to Newcastle's warm weather training camp in Dubai]. Me and the boys had a good week out there training hard and team bonding. All in all, it was a good, positive trip. Now it's back to work in sunny Newcastle.

“The injury is going in the right direction. I’m jogging now, which is positive, (I am) increasing day by day, working harder and ticking different boxes off. You know how it is when you're going back for an injury. You've got to hit certain markers before you can go into the next stage of your rehab. So just building up that load really, and then, soon, the comeback will be there.

“I'm hoping to get a few games in and, as I said previously, you want to score as a striker on your return. So I'm working hard to hold on to that moment for when I do return to make sure that it's a positive one.”
