Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson insists he is 'nice and robust' in response to any fitness concerns ahead of a potential World Cup call-up. The Magpies number nine has netted six goals in nine appearances so far this season, and Gareth Southgate watched his two-goal display in the rout of Aston Villa from the stands at St James' Park.
Wilson has earned four England caps and scored on his Three Lions debut against the USA, but has not featured for his country since 2019. Tammy Abraham and Ivan Toney were the strikers named alongside captain Harry Kane in the final squad ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.
The former Bournemouth man's time at St James' Park so far has been blighted by injuries, with a calf complaint ruling the 30-year-old out for much of the second-half of last season. Wilson has already missed seven matches this term with a hamstring injury suffered during the draw with Manchester City in August.

However, the in-form striker has dismissed concerns over this track record which pre-dates his time in black-and-white. When asked for a response to these doubts, Wilson told the Mirror: “I’m nice and robust now…”
Reflecting on his most recent injury lay-off, he added: “It was very frustrating. The timing wasn’t ideal. I had a set amount of fixtures to impress. I haven’t been in the England set-up for a few years now and I was going to have to do more on the pitch than others who have been in the squad. I had limited time.
"So, when you know you’re going to miss a few games, you have to hit the ground running as soon as you come back. No corners were cut with my rehab. I knew, this time, I had to be sure. I had to find form straight away. I scored on my return and haven’t looked back.”
