Callum Robinson breaks his silence following costly red card for Cardiff against Swanswa

Callum Robinson has apologised to Cardiff City fans for his costly red card in Sunday's South Wales derby.

The Republic of Ireland striker was handed his marching orders after just seven minutes for throwing the ball into the face of Swansea City defender Ben Cabango, in a flashpoint that undoubtedly defined a typically fiery contest between the two rivals.

Swansea went on to win the game 2-0 courtesy of goals from Ollie Cooper and Michael Obafemi, handing Russell Martin a third straight derby win and condemning Cardiff to a third consecutive league defeat under interim boss Mark Hudson, reports Wales Online.

To compound matters, Cardiff are set to be without the striker for the next three games, with City set to entertain Rotherham United next weekend, while Watford and a long trip to Sunderland also await.

Robinson, a deadline-day signing under previous boss Steve Morison, has now taken to social media to apologise for his actions, with the Republic of Ireland international also pledging to bounce back stronger.

Taking to his Instagram on Monday afternoon, he wrote: "I take full responsibility for yesterday. I know how important this fixture is for our fans and everyone associated with the club and my actions weren’t good enough.

"I was gutted to leave my teammates out there playing with a man less. I will now do all I can to help the club achieve the results the fans deserve going forward."

Speaking after the game, Hudson admitted he had few complaints with the decision to show a red card, but insisted that Robinson remained an important part of the club's plans for the rest of the season.

“He’s been brilliant since he’s come into the football club," Hudson said. "He’s brilliant with the players, and he’s been brilliant in the build-up towards it.

“It’s something to learn from and I can only focus on the players who were on from seven onwards. They stuck in, fought for the club, fought for the badge, and fought for each other which is all you can ask.”

Asked whether Robinson had apologised to the players, Hudson added: “He’s had a few words with the players, of course. He’s an experienced person, an experienced player and I can say that since he’s come in he’s been brilliant for the football club.”
