Callum McGregor in Liverpool quality billing as Celtic captain 'definitely' fits Jurgen Klopp mould

Celtic hero Peter Grant insists Callum McGregor would have no issue playing for Liverpool at the top level.

The Scotland cap has been Mr Reliable for the Hoops in recent years, succeeding club legend Scott Brown with the armband upon the 22-honour captain left in 2021. McGregor is having a purple patch under new boss Ange Postecoglou who has been full of praise for the 29-year-old's work rate and attitude at Parkhead.

The Scotland Hall of Fame also beckons for the Celtic star as his 50th appearance for his country edges closer. Yet Grant believes, despite his seemingly clear desire to commit fully to Glasgow, that Jurgen Klopp would benefit from a player of his quality.

Grant told Go Radio: "I think he definitely could [play for Liverpool]. He can play with the ball, he knows the area exceptionally well. He's always available to play and available for his teammates to give him the ball, which is so important.

"When you play for these top teams, you have to want the ball all the time. He plays every game and it's one thing that Liverpool have probably struggled with is the fact that they've had a midfield that they've had to constantly chop and change. He's getting a little bit older now but Callum plays week in, and week out and he's been outstanding.

"He plays on that central midfield place on his own. We thought Celtic would miss him a little bit when he was out. Matt O'Riley came in and did very well, but there are certain situations where you knew you would miss Callum.

"He's got that quality and he plays every game for Scotland, Celtic, he turns up all the time and is ready to put the jersey on. But more importantly, he's a fantastic footballer."
