Callum McGregor ditches Celtic protection mask for new season as skipper returns against Rapid Vienna

Callum McGregor ditches Celtic protection mask for new season as skipper returns against Rapid Vienna

CALLUM MCGREGOR has ditched his protective face mask for the new season after returning today against Rapid Vienna.

The Scotland star sustained a serious facial injury during the Hoops' 2-1 Scottish Cup victory over Alloa back in January.

Since then he has worn a white mask for both club and country, but it appears he has decided to drop the protection for the new season.

Speaking previously about the cheekbone injury, McGregor said: "It's fine and I'm feeling good.

"It [the mask] seems to have been strong enough to get through the game and I've been recovering well so there are no issues so far."

Some fans have referred to their skipper as 'Cal Mask' due to his temporary  look on the pitch.

And the midfielder laughed off the new nickname as he admitted it might catch on amongst the Celtic support.

Quizzed on whether he thought it'd be picked up by fans, he replied: "I think it might, aye.

"You know what these social media trends are like.

"Hopefully I don't need it for too much longer, but everyone can have a bit of fun about it just now. Hopefully it does its job and I'll be alright."
