Callum Doyle 'buzzing' for early Sunderland reunion as he joins Championship side on loan

Former Sunderland loanee Callum Doyle has signed for Coventry City on a season-long-loan deal. The Manchester City defender will spend the year with the Sky Blues following his first season in senior football with the Black Cats last term.

Doyle made 44 appearances for Sunderland last season as he played an important role in the club’s promotion back to the Championship. Alex Neil’s side beat Wycombe Wanderers 2-0 in the play-off final to end their four year stay in League One.

The 18-year-old will not have to wait for his first reunion with his former side either, as Coventry travel to the Stadium of Light on the opening day of the season. Speaking after confirmation of his arrival this evening, Doyle discussed the ‘great experience’ he had during his time Sunderland and is ‘buzzing’ to begin his Coventry career at his former club.

He told ccfc.co.uk: “The whole season I thought it went well, obviously it was a great experience for me to get my first season in professional football. It was good to be around the first team and it was good to get the opportunity to play as many games as I did. All in all, a really good experience.

“Yeah I don’t think the fans will like it but I am really buzzing to start off there.”

Sky Blues boss Mark Robins, meanwhile, is delighted to welcome Doyle to the club after his 'successful season' on loan at the Black Cats. Via Coventry Telegraph, he said: “We are delighted to welcome Callum to Coventry City.

“He is a really good player with a lot of potential, who we know a lot about, and we’re all looking forward to working with him. Callum is a regular in the England set-up and was a key player in helping the Under-19s win the European Championships only a few weeks ago, scoring in the final.

“He enjoyed a successful first season with Sunderland, helping them win promotion and, as I say, we are very happy to be able to welcome him to the club."
