Calls for Shannon Matthews the Musical to be 'shut down' before it starts

Leeds Live readers have called for the controversial 'Shannon Matthews the Musical' to be 'shut down before it even starts'.

The show, created by Kunts and the Gang, is coming to Leeds next month with two 'exclusive' performances set to take place at the Lending Room in Woodhouse on July 23 at 6.30pm and 9.30pm. Both shows have already sold out.

The musical is also set to run in its entirety at Edinburgh Fringe. It will follow the story of Shannon's disgraced mum Karen Matthews who was jailed for kidnapping her daughter in a bizarre and cruel plot to claim reward money.

But Leeds Live readers have today (Fri) branded the musical 'sick' and 'bang out of order'. Nic Ky said: "Imagine being that poor lass. Let her move on and forget about it. What her so called family did was disgraceful."

Veronica Anne O'Grady described the musical as "the sickest thing I have ever known". Veronica added: "It needs shutting down before it even starts." Jean Flanagan agreed, saying: "This should never be allowed. What that child went through was disgusting and evil."

"Why on earth would anyone want to make a musical out of this?" said Noreen Miller, while Clive Clark added: "Bang out of order. Whoever thought of this wants a good talking to."

Lynne Fox said people should only respond in one way to the show. "Don't go see it - simple."

Shannon Matthews went missing for over three weeks before she was found by West Yorkshire Police officers in the base of a divan bed just a mile from her home. Her disappearance sparked one of the force’s biggest manhunts and saw the Dewsbury Moor estate band together to search for the schoolgirl.

Shannon was found 24 days later at Michael Donovan's home. Donovan was the uncle of Karen Matthews' then partner, Craig Meehan. It later emerged that Shannon's mum, Karen, was always aware of the nine-year old's whereabouts.

Matthews and Donovan were both sentenced to eight years for kidnap, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice.
