Calls for running track and outdoor gym to be incorporated into Paisley park plans

Calls have been made for a running track and outdoor gym to be incorporated into Renfrewshire Council plans for a Paisley park.

Works are under way at St James' Playing Fields, where cash has been spent on replacing the old pavilions and reinstating four full-size pitches.

However, community activists have urged the local authority to invest in other exercise facilities, which can be used free of charge, and benches and picnic tables.

Mike Dillon, spokesman for Paisley North Community Council, spoke about the potential mental health benefits of such equipment, which could encourage more people in the area to spend time outside.

He said: "They are a step in the right direction, of course they are, but we would like to see more than four football pitches. It's not very much. We want more investment in things that people can use without a cost.

"It would be nice if Renfrewshire Council or OneRen came and spoke with us. It's our area, we want to be involved in decision making in our area. We don't want people telling us what we're getting – ask us what we want and let's work together.

"Let mums bring their kids to play in the park and they've got a bench to sit on. Right now there's nothing to sit on, except on the grass. It would be nice to have some picnic tables.

"People should have a space that they can enjoy and post-covid. We know there's a lot of mental health issues and one of the best ways of dealing with those issues is getting people into the fresh air, so they can enjoy their surroundings.

"Give the people something to use and they will use it."

Renfrewshire Council confirmed it would be willing to engage with the community council and other groups about future plans for the park.

A spokesman said: "Work is already well under way to create new and improved facilities at St James' Playing Fields for local footballers.

"The old outdated pavilions have now been demolished and will be replaced with new changing facilities. We will also reinstate four full-size football pitches to be operated by OneRen, as well as landscaping works, and improvements to the road and parking.

"In terms of future development on the site, we would be happy to engage with the community council or any other local groups over how we could work with them to do that at St James.

"Over the past few years we have supported many community groups across Renfrewshire to take forward their own ideas to improve outdoor facilities in their areas through our £1.25m Green Spaces, Parks and Play Areas and Villages Investment Fund."
