Calls for Partick area to be cleaned up as fly-tipping and overflowing bin leave streets 'filthy'

Calls have been made for a west end neighbourhood to be cleaned up following a number of fly-tipping and littering issues.

A number of streets in Partick are full of overflowing bins and fly-tipping, leading to frustration amongst local residents.

One resident Lou Kirsty said: "The bins are also taking up two parking spaces for permit holders. It’s like a dump with lots of seagulls and also vermin."

Lou explained that fly-tipping and overflowing rubbish is becoming a common problem, saying "there are shopping trolleys and everything. The streets are filthy."

Glasgow City Council has condemned fly-tipping as a "blight on our communities" and urged residents to use waste and recycling centres as well as bulk uplift services.

They also described staff as having an "uphill battle" to keep streets clean.

A council spokesman said: "Fly-tipping is a blight on our communities. There is absolutely no excuse for it - our Household Waste and Recycling Centres are open seven days a week from 8am to 8pm and we also offer a free bulk uplift service to residents.

"Cleansing staff work hard every day to keep our streets clean but unfortunately it can be an uphill battle as some thoughtless people continue to treat our environment with disdain - littering and fly-tipping indiscriminately.

"We will issue fixed penalty notice to anyone found responsible for fly-tipping offences and we urge the public to report anyone they see dumping rubbish or debris on our website or on my Glasgow app."
