Calls for Liverpool Christmas market to move from 'difficult' location

People are calling for Liverpool Christmas markets to be moved.

The ECHO reported on a couple who left Liverpool Christmas markets after 20 minutes following claims they faced a number of accessibility issues. The couple claim the cobbles and steps into some stalls make parts of the market inaccessible for wheelchair users.

In a statement, Liverpool City Council said they are "continuing to make the Christmas Market on the Plateau as accessible as possible". Readers were quick to share their own experiences, with some calling on the council to reconsider the market's current location.

Suziie Davis said: "I have a severely disabled child. I’ve voiced my opinion about the dreadful accessibility issue every year, since the market first arrived.

"My child is now bigger than me and it’s just so difficult. We tried to go and enjoy a visit there last Friday but it’s near impossible. Our trip was cut short due to the front wheel snapping on his wheelchair."

Lisa Jane Harrison said: "Williamson square would be a lovely location and it's all flat. They should never have moved the market it's in a stupid location."

Steph Hughan added: "I've complained about this for years but no one listens."

Some readers suggested that there are accessibility problems in other parts of the city centre.

Elena Sin Hache said: "Absolutely true. Liverpool is barely accessible. There are so many issues. I wanted to go with my sister this week. Probably now we won't go because she won't be able to see or do anything. Very disappointed with the council of a large city like Liverpool."

Sarah McCullough added: "Our Liverpool City Council do not seem to care about Disability Access. Even the main road pavements are not disabled accessible in parts of the city (Lodge Lane)."

A Liverpool City Council spokesperson said “Liverpool City Council and the organisers of the Liverpool Christmas Market are committed to ensuring that, so far as reasonably practicable, access to the Christmas Market is accessible to everyone wishing to attend.

"The Plateau area is cobbled and we are aware this can be challenging to some. We have worked extensively with accessibility advisors over the last few years to explore appropriate options to cover the cobbles and make the area level, without compromising their Grade 1 listed status.

"The operator is continuing to make the Christmas Market on the Plateau as accessible as possible, putting in dropped kerbs and ramps where necessary, and expanding the market to incorporate William Brown Street and St Johns Gardens which are not cobbled.

"There is an accessible toilet facility for wheelchair users and ambulant disabled persons and an autism friendly experience is currently being explored, whereby the lighting and volume will be adjusted for a more relaxing atmosphere on a specific day and time."
