Calls for app that helps disabled people park in Dublin to be introduced

A Councillor is calling for a new app that helps the disabled find empty parking bays to be brought to Dublin City.

SpaceFinder was introduced to Limerick City last year and gives users real-time updates on what disabled parking spaces are free in the city.

Cllr Danny Byrne is calling for sensors to be put in all of DCC's disabled parking spaces so the app can be introduced in the capital.

He said: "There is a new app, which has been developed by a Limerick technology company, called Spacefinder. That works by having sensors at disabled car parking spots. Then you can get an app on your phone which will tell you where there is a free spot.

"I think it is a fantastic idea and I have been pushing our Council to do that. I'd like to see it rolled out around the country because we all know how painful it is sometimes to find parking and you can imagine it is much more painful for people who are disabled or have a disabled child."

Cllr Byrne is hopeful the technology will be introduced as the Council has mapped all the disabled spots acorss the city recently.

"I do think Dublin City Council will implement it because they are after mapping all the disabled spots in the city. These things move very, very slowly but I'm hopeful that it will be moved out later this year."

A DCC spokeswoman told Dublin Live the Council are looking into how to bring the project to Dublin.

She said: "DCC are investigating how to progress this project at present. It is too early in the process to give this information. DCC is committed to undertaking a project in this area and more information will be available later in the year."
