Callous Lanarkshire carer stole nearly £12k after swiping pensioner's bank card

A Lanarkshire carer stole an elderly woman's bank card and swiped £11,800.

Margaret McPhail took the 87-year-old's bank card from her home in Cambuslang.

The 62-year-old committed the crime between March 5, 2019 and January 21, 2020.

McPhail used the card at a Morrisons, also in Cambuslang.

She pled guilty today at Glasgow Sheriff Court to a single charge of theft.

Sheriff Michael Hanlon asked McPhail's lawyer: "Was she known and was she someone in a position of trust?"

Chris Devine, defending, replied: "Yes."

Sentence was deferred pending background reports until next month where more information regarding the circumstances will be heard.

The sheriff told McPhail: "This is obviously a very serious matter."

McPhail, also of Cambuslang, had her bail continued meantime.
