A caller who rang a school in Tynemouth with concerns regarding an alleged 'firearms incident' was mistaken, police have said.
At 10.45am today (October 6), Northumbria Police received report from a school in Tynemouth, which officers have not named, to say a concerned member of the public had called to say they had heard there may have been a firearm-related incident in the area.
The incident sparked widespread concern on social media but the force have confirmed that no incident involving a firearm had taken place in Tynemouth and that the caller was simply mistaken.

They do not believe that the call was made maliciously and officers believe the call was made good faith.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At 10.45am today (Thursday) we were made aware of a call received by a school in Tynemouth by a concerned member of the public.
"The caller alleged they had heard there may have been a firearm-related incident in the area. It transpired that the caller was mistaken and there was no such incident that had occurred.
"Officers are satisfied the call was made in good faith and have spoken to all relevant parties, with appropriate advice given.”
A spokesperson for North Tyneside Council added: "It’s been confirmed there’s no ongoing incident we’re aware of or threat to the school."
