Callander man drove dirt bike on A84 whilst being more than twice over drink drive limit

A Callander man who drove a dirt bike on the main A84 road while more than twice over the alcohol limit was this week jailed for nine months.

Stirling Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday that Kieran Saunders, of Ritchie Place, had been out of prison on licence at the time of the offence on October 22 last year.

The fiscal depute told Stirling Sheriff Court that officers on patrol at 4.20am that day had been attending to an unrelated matter when they spotted Saunders driving the ‘Demon’ dirt bike on the A84 east of Callander.

Saunders was stopped and police checks carried out.

The depute fiscal also pointed out that Saunders had failed a roadside breath test.

Cannabis weighing 28g was also found within a pocket of Saunders’ jacket.

The 31-year old had admitted charges of driving the dirt bike while the proportion of alcohol in his breath was 54mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The limit being 22mg.

Saunders further pleaded guilty to driving the bike without a licence and insurance as well as a charge of possessing cannabis.

His agent Ken Dalling told Sheriff Derek Hamilton that his client had been socialising with a friend in Doune and had been drinking. Saunders got on the bike and was driving back home to Callander when he was stopped by police.

The cannabis, Mr Dalling said, was worth £180 and Saunders was to pay his supplier “in due course”.

Sheriff Hamilton noted that Saunders had received a 38-month prison term for an offence committed in December 2020.

At the time of the A84 offences in October last year Saunders had been out of prison for two months on licence.

Mr Dalling stressed that the offences before the court were not for violence or disorder. Saunders had also been engaging in appointments with agencies, he said.

Sheriff Hamilton sentenced Saunders to a total term of nine months’ imprisonment. He was admonished on the charges of driving without insurance and driving licence - and banned from driving for 18 months on the drink-driving charge.
